In November 2024, Vallfirest had the privilege of participating in the EU Prescribed Fire Training Exchange (TREX) held in Alto Minho, Portugal. This significant event brought together over 45 professionals from nine countries—Portugal, Spain, USA, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Poland, Guatemala, and Ecuador—to share knowledge and practices in wildfire management.
During our presence at the event, Vallfirest not only showcased the capabilities of the Dronster, our state-of-the-art remote-controlled forestry mulcher, but also introduced an exciting new innovation: an experimental burner device mounted on a DJI Agriculture drone.
The Dronster: A Proven Solution for Wildfire Management
Attendees observed firsthand how the Dronster can be utilized in various scenarios:
- Wildland Fires: The Dronster assists in creating defense lines and managing fire perimeters, significantly improving crew performance by operating at a constant speed and delivering consistent results.
- Structural and Industrial Fires: Its versatility allows for effective intervention in complex environments, aiding in tasks such as debris removal and creating safe zones.
- Chemical Risk Situations: The Dronster can operate in hazardous areas while keeping personnel at a safe distance, thereby reducing exposure to dangerous substances.
Equipped with a Hatz 3-cylinder, 4-stroke engine delivering 59 HP, the Dronster can navigate challenging terrains with agility, thanks to its large front angle of attack and chassis elevation. It efficiently handles slopes exceeding 40 degrees and can maneuver through vegetation with just a one-meter clearance. The remote control system, operable from up to 150 meters away, ensures that operators can maintain a safe distance during high-risk operations.
Introducing the Experimental Burner Device
In addition to the Dronster, Vallfirest conducted tests with an innovative burner prototype mounted on a DJI Agriculture drone. This groundbreaking device aims to revolutionize prescribed burns by enabling controlled ignitions from the air. Key advantages include:
- Enhanced Safety: Aerial ignitions reduce the need for personnel to work in high-risk areas, minimizing exposure to danger.
- Increased Precision: The drone-mounted burner allows for precise ignitions in hard-to-reach terrains, creating effective firebreaks and mosaic landscapes.
- Adaptability: Designed to operate in various environmental conditions, the device complements traditional methods while introducing a modern approach to wildfire management.
A Synergy of Tradition and Innovation
Our participation in EU TREX 2024 underscored the importance of integrating advanced technology with traditional fire management practices. The Dronster and the experimental burner device exemplify this synergy, offering robust solutions to contemporary wildfire challenges.
We extend our gratitude to the organizers of EU TREX 2024 for the opportunity to present these innovations and to all participants for their engagement and valuable feedback. Together, we are advancing towards safer and more effective wildfire management strategies.
